What You Can Do to Keep Your Office Productive
Too many business managers and owners think that simply throwing a top-quality managerial office desk into the corporate office will fix all their problems and create a happy, productive workspace. But before you jump headlong into this sort of expense, wait. All that you really need to do to boost employee morale and get your office on track in terms of productivity is to make a few design tweaks – and these can quite honestly be minor changes.
First and foremost, think about the ergonomics! No one is ever productive when their back is aching from the wrong chair, or if they have to march up and down to inconveniently placed office equipment areas. Make sure that your desks and chairs are set up right and that everything is in reach. The number one key to productivity is comfort and, of course, convenience. Make it easy for your staff members to do their jobs and it will be just that, easy!
Declutter things! A cluttered desk and office space leads to a disorganised and cluttered mind and work process. Nothing can slow a person down more than having a million things to do and no process of getting things done in an ordered fashion. Make sure that your desks are clear of clutter, and that you have sufficient storage and filing systems to cater to keeping things decluttered. If you are worried that no one will take responsibility for the decluttering of the office space, make it a rule that each person is in charge of their own area or zone.
Play with colours if you can. Not everyone wants a rainbow-inspired office space, but if you’re going through each day with boring white walls, expect your staff members to be bored too. You don’t necessarily need to create a go-cart track to keep staff members inspired and motivated in the workplace. Just make the work-space look fun and exciting. You can paint the walls, invest in colourful chairs, or include some art, office equipment and accessories that add a bit of interest.
Say “no” to open plan. Gone are the days when it was considered “cool” to keep all staff members exposed to one another. As humans, we are all attached to privacy to some extent. If you only have a large open office space to work with, set up the managerial desks around the room, and set up some screens and divisions to create personal areas for each staff member.
Get rid of those shackles and create social zones for your staff members. Offices aren’t all about managerial desks and board room tables. If your staff members feel like they are chained to their desks, chances are high that they will spend a large portion of their time trying to escape them. Create a variety of social areas for your staff members to relax, unwind and brain storm in. These should be comfortable couches, coffee tables, tea and coffee making facilities, and anything else that they might find interesting. If your staff members are encouraged to stretch their legs and go for a breather, you will find that they are far more productive in the hours that they are at their desks.
