Quantum’s Convenient Chair Categories

office chairModern office chair suppliers, like Quantum, offer numerous ranges of seating solutions, which are designed and categorise for customers’ convenient selection as:

  • Draughtsman – as mentioned above
  • Executives – usually a more luxurious option
  • Ergonomic – the most comfortable, healthy and supportive option for good posture when seated, especially for frequent lengthy periods of time, designed with particular focus on correct spinal position and overall spinal health, plus comfort
  • Economy – budget beaters, without compromising on Quantum’s recognised quality
  • Managerial
  • Heavy duty – hard-working models, designed and manufactured to withstand robust, frequent high-usage and weight-bearing conditions
  • Typists and operators
  • Training room – stackable chairs, which save space when stored and not in use

Other than the training facility’s stackable units, all other options that are specifically designed for personnel are adjustable; the more exclusive the design, the more adjustment options it features. Most other office models are also fitted with casters, which enable seated occupants of chairs to move easily to and from working positions at their desks.

Typical visitors’ chairs, those positioned on the opposite (non-working) side of desks, do not offer this mobile feature. Additionally, many ranges feature a choice of seating products with and without armrests.

Standing, Walking Upright and Sitting

Human evolution from primate species included mankind’s ability and inclination to stand and walk upright, in a bipedal position (on two [hind] feet), a great departure from walking on all fours. Sitting – resting on the buttocks – is a commonplace action amongst both Homo sapiens and primate species.

Some are of the opinion that the primate species from which human beings evolved between about 4 million to approximately 12 million years ago began walking upright to facilitate the carrying of food, while others think that we assumed our upright stance and gait to detect prey and other sources of food, or escape from detected potential threats, dangers and enemies.

Somewhere to Sit

At about the same time or a little later, ancient humans, by then living permanently on terra firma, probably sat flat on the ground, on tree stumps or rocks when they felt the need to sit down and rest awhile, which would enable them to remain awake and relatively alert. Thereafter, much later, when man had learned how to make and use tools and construct buildings, he began to make furniture, including chairs.

Although this is speculative, it is true that the first evidence of ancient man’s use of specially made chairs was discovered intact in ancient Egyptian burial chambers. Such seats, widely regarded as status symbols, rather than as comfortable furniture upon which to sit, were reserved for the pharaoh and other wealthy persons. Archaeologists thus date the use of chairs back to approximately 3 100 BC.

The Role of Ergonomic Designs

Ergonomic office chairs may cost somewhat more than standard, straight-backed units, but they are well worth the extra investment, virtually from day one. It’s all due to the need to support and maintain the natural curvature of a healthy spinal column – an S-shape when viewed from the side, from top (neck) to bottom (at coccyx or hip level).

Because office-based personnel spend long hours sitting at desks, poor posture and lack of correct back support may lead to aching backs, muscular tension, poor concentration and performance, and possibly, time off work because of back problems.

Ergonomic office chairs provide perfect support where needed, maintaining and supporting the entire spine’s S-shape, accommodating hips in position and ensuring that upper legs are parallel to the floor and bent at a 900 angle at the knees.

Irrespective of your individuals’ posture, and your budget and preference, Quantum Office Furniture is on hand with perfectly affordable products and specialised services.
