How to Choose the Right Office Chairs

How many hours do you spend at your desk each day? Do you feel comfortable while you are at work? Various studies have shown that staff members who are comfortable and have access to the right furniture and equipment are more productive in general, which means greater profits for the business. Whether you, or your staff members, spend one hour or 8 hours at your desk, it is of vital importance that you have the right ergonomic office chairs at your disposal.

The right chair will provide you with many hours of comfortable sitting and will also provide you with the right back support. When shopping around for the right chairs to use in the office, the choices can become overwhelming. There is a wide variety of good chairs to choose from, all with varying prices attached, so how do you choose the right one? There are a number of things that you can consider or look for in a good chair to use in your office as follows:

  • Is the seat height adjustable? Any good office chair should have an adjustable seat. There should be a level under the seat or on the side of the seat that will let you adjust the range of the chair height by a few centimetres. The ideal sitting position is to have you feet flat on the floor. Your arms should be even with the desk height and your thighs should be horizontal.
  • Is the depth and width of the seat adjustable? The seats depth and width should be deep enough to provide comfortable support. When sitting, there should be a space between the back of your knees and the seat, to ensure comfort.
  • Is the backrest supportive? A good office chair will allow you to adjust the angle and height of the backrest. The back rest should provide sufficient support for the lower back to avoid slouching and lower back pain issues.
  • What is the seat material made of? Choose an office chair that has a seat material that can breathe. This will provide added comfort especially when sitting for long periods of time. Pay attention to the seat cover or material of the various office chairs that you are interested in.
  • Does the chair offer good lumbar support? When sitting, you will find that your spine curves inwards and this needs to be supported. This is particularly important if you need to sit for many hours. Slouching and straining will cause discomfort and damage to the lower spine. A good office chair will provide support for the inward curve of your spine.
  • Does the chair offer adjustable arm rests? It is important to allow your arms to rest comfortably so that your shoulders can relax. Make sure that the chair you buy has adjustable arm rests so that you can position them to suit your body.
