With some 18 years’ involvement in our industry and combined experience spanning 60 odd years, there’s not much that we at Quantum Office Furniture have not seen, heard and observed about matters pertaining to our speciality. We’re sharing a few insights with you.
What is the very first thing you think of when you think “office”? You have to come up with an immediate answer, naming the first item that jumps into your mind. Almost invariably, one of the most commonplace first items to occur to you and many others, practically automatically, is an office desk. It is the primary piece of furniture that is found in virtually all furnished offices right across the world, and certainly in South Africa.
Next, it’s probably the office chair, because unless using a standing desk, one needs a chair on which to sit at any table-like product. However, first and foremost, office desks come to mind. Without this substantial piece of furniture, an office cannot function as such, despite all today’s modern technologies, which also form part and parcel of the efficiently operating workspace.
Traditionally, dark, heavy solid wood office desks were a staple in many executives’ offices. To this day, these timeless pieces are workplace symbols, especially if the piece in question is a family heirloom, or an office occupant has created a workplace ambience that resembles that of a now-distant era.
Nowadays, these timeless office desks can be classified as antiques, collectables, vintage or retro pieces that stand the test of time in many workplaces to this day.
Traditional office desks are bulky and robust, which makes moving and relocating them in one piece a labour-intensive task. They may have to be dismantled into parts, which can be managed and moved separately, and thereafter reassembled, when in place.
Lots of lifting, shifting, manoeuvring and muscle power are essential, failing which, the old office desk stays put, a virtually permanent fixture in its familiar place. It might just as well have been planted and rooted there, much like the old tree from which its wood was harvested.
Though classic, heavy, wooden office desks and furnishings will always maintain a spot amongst go-to office furniture pieces, today, the emphasis is on lighter, brighter, and more functional office furniture, with workspaces to match.
