From time to time, people who are involved in the supply of goods and/or the provision of services, have been known to remark that the more choices you offer your customers and clients, the more difficult it is for them to make up their minds and come to a decision about which option they want.
This tendency towards confusion shouldn’t come as a surprise in a major metropolis like Johannesburg, because there are so many suppliers of all types of merchandise in the so-called City of Gold, where one can find just about anything and everything one requires. Customers of Quantum Office Furniture aren’t subjected to the same selection struggles, despite our proximity to bustling, busy Johannesburg’s myriad suppliers of modern office furniture.
Because of factors such as urban decay, insufficient on- and off-street parking facilities and traffic congestion, much of the Johannesburg CBD’s active business sector has migrated towards the city’s suburbs, to places like Sandton, and Randburg, as well as adjacent towns and other municipal areas, which are not limited to, but include Bedfordview, Edenvale, Germiston, Midrand and Benoni.
Our modern office furniture supply company, Quantum Office Furniture, is situated in Benoni. As the crow flies, Benoni is located some 28km east of Johannesburg. The distance between the two, via a modern road network, is a tad less than 31km, so it’s to be expected that Benoni, the smaller of the two cities, is almost regarded as an outlying part of its much larger counterpart, Johannesburg.
However, the ties between these two cities don’t start or end there. In the latter part of the 1800s, shortly after the discovery of the extensive gold reef, later named the Witwatersrand, the area known as Benoni also featured a tented mining camp.
As more and more miners and suppliers of equipment, necessities and niceties – like furniture – settled here, the population and the area that it occupied increased. Benoni soon became a town, just as had happened when Johannesburg was founded.
Modern Johannesburg, a sprawling, world-class city, occupies an exceptionally large area. Additionally, Johannesburg is famous for the area’s proliferation of trees, which – en masse – can be seen from space, having the appearance of an enormous urban jungle or manmade forest of epic proportions. Some refer to this phenomenon as “the largest manmade forest in the world”.
This iconic city, founded as the direct result of the discovery of gold, occupies a greater area than New York City – some 1 644,96km2 (some sources refer to a greater Johannesburg metropolis of 2 300km2), versus NYC’s 790km2. In area, this city is also larger than London, whilst it spans an extensive area, similar to that of Los Angeles.
The face, furnishings, features and certain functions of South African offices have changed completely since the days of the gold rush and the Randlords who made their money from mining gold. Gone are the ornate, heavy, overlarge and cumbersome desks, chairs, bookcases, shelves and storage units of that time.
