A chair is a chair is just a chair, right? Not so, not at all; today, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, although this supposition may once have been partially correct, when the most basic seats shared several characteristics, it was probably never an entirely accurate statement about the humble, homemade or fancy, carefully crafted ornate chair, the place upon which people place/d their bottoms to rest a while, by taking the weight off their feet.
Because human beings have evolved to be bipedal (walk upright or adopt an upright stance), the hard-working human foot takes a lot of stress and strain, since it’s a relatively small limb that supports the entire body’s bulk and weight, whether in motion or stationary.
The foot and ankle are made up of a series of small bones, delicate tendons, vital ligaments, blood vessels and numerous nerves and highly sensitive nerve endings. Foot problems frequently result in an uneven gait, which then manifests in pain – or deferred pain – in the lower back region.
In turn, the lower back area supports a substantial weight from above, that of the upper body, its upper lumbar, thoracic and cervical spinal column, hard-working limbs, and the head. The pressure from upper body weight is inevitably somewhat exacerbated by the force of gravity too.
The “horse’s tail” bundles of nerves are found in the lower back, where they branch off the spinal column; thus various factors may combine in making the lower back prone to aches and pains.
Even when seated with the back in a straight, upright position, the entire back, particularly its lower section, still experiences pressure – if unsupported or improperly supported. An ergonomic chair or other ergonomically–designed form of seating has multiple benefits, because a chair of this type, in its entirety, is specifically designed to support the back and associated parts of the body.
Although it is preferable that all office personnel be furnished with the best seating options, ergonomic chairs are most often acquired for use by executives in the formal office environment. In a home office, one has the freedom of choice when selecting preferred seating.
Since the advent of COVID-19, various stages of lockdown and the need to maintain a safe social distance from others, many people continue to work from home. The home office and its furniture are no longer merely “nice to have” features, utilised to do the household budget, make online account payments and a few personal phone calls. It now has an important working office identity.
Benefits of ergonomic furniture should not be denied here, at your own Casa.
Everyone has undoubtedly been seated on an uncomfortable chair more than once in their lives. Some of the most backside- and back-unfriendly seats were probably encountered in situations and places where long periods of sitting still was the rule and expectation, rather than a choice.
One thinks of erstwhile church pews, schoolroom benches, and the hard, unsupportive seats in waiting rooms, office or home office chairs, and when and on what type of chair one is seated during lengthy lectures and conferences, particularly if it takes a long time to complete the agenda or the lecture content is boring, made more so if delivered in a monotone.
